Maldives to Reopen to International Tourism July 15

The 1,192 islands of the Maldives will reopen to international tourists on July 15. U.S. citizens and international visitors will first be allowed only on resort islands, as well as on live-aboard boats. Then, from August 1, guest houses and hotels on inhabited islands will be allowed to reopen (although some are allowed to host in-transit passengers before August 1). The destination, given its remote location and new safety procedures, is fortunate enough to reopen with limited restrictions.

Here's what you need to know:

International visitors will not have to pay additional fees or produce paperwork that proves they have tested negative for coronavirus upon arrival. Visitors without symptoms will also not have to quarantine themselves; however, visitors who have a history of contact with someone with a confirmed case of coronavirus or has had visible symptoms, within the last 14 days are advised not to travel to the country.

Health declaration cards, which will need to be filled out, will be provided to visitors on their aircraft, and a 30-day tourist visa will be provided on arrival, and guests must have a confirmed booking in a tourist establishment registered with the Ministry of Tourism, prior to traveling. Travelers will also only be allowed to stay at one resort during the first phase of the reopening.

Masks, social distancing, thermal screening and use of hand sanitizer are encouraged at the airport and in transit

In addition to the destination's tourism procedures, all of the islands' resorts and accommodations are taking all recommendation precautions as they reopen. Properties have respectively implemented their own series of new cleanliness and hygiene protocols to ensure that guests have a safe return to travel.
