Wilderness Toka Leya has completed a light refurbishment of all guest suites and main areas. Set in Zambia’s Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, the camp’s refreshed look celebrates the sanctuary overlooking the Zambezi River.
“The waters, wildlife and tranquility of the Zambezi inspired the design, décor and furnishings, with the color palette and numerous pieces chosen specifically to embrace Toka Leya’s natural and cultural heritage,” said lead interior designer, Reflecting Africa’s Cate Simpson.
Fitted with canvas walls in muted tones, the suites now offer a more spacious interior, and the new beds are adorned with draw-back mosquito nets. Other highlights include locally designed light fittings, black-out curtains and contemporary furnishings interspersed with printed fabric artworks of Victoria Falls. Pretty cool: A pod swing floats above each private deck, offerings guests a spot to immerse themselves in the surrounding wilderness.
The main areas have been redesigned to maximize the natural spaces of the camp and its remote location. All furnishings have been replaced with customized décor, influenced by the surrounding Zambezi, while paying homage to the local community. Bespoke Zambian basket light fittings feature in the lounge and dining areas, which are now further spread out to create "pockets of calm" for guests to enjoy their wild surrounds. The bar area has been relocated and enlarged. Bean bags add a splash of color on the beach and offer the ultimate relaxation spot on the water’s edge. Other facilities include an infinity pool, fire pit, a riverside spa and gym.
Toka Leya is a tranquil safari base from which you can easily access and explore Victoria Falls and the adventure hub of Livingstone. Activities include cruises, catch-and-release fishing, game drives and walks (subject to the availability of a guide), besides back-of-house tours showcasing the camp’s tree-planting and other sustainability initiatives. In and around camp, guests will spot hippos, crocodiles, elephants and buffalos, and a range of birds, with “specials” such as the African finfoot, and seasonal migrants including the African skimmer.
