As part of the Island’s responsible four-phased reopening plan, Puerto Rico announced it will formally reopen for inbound tourism on July 15. Beaches have already reopened with sunbathing and other recreational activities now permitted, limiting group gathering to only those within the same household.
Puerto Rico, according to Discover Puerto Rico, has exercised an abundance of caution since the onset of COVID-19 (coronavirus), with policies in place to avoid the spread of the virus, including being the first U.S. entity to implement such measures as an island-wide curfew. Thorough cleanliness measures are in place and enhanced policies are being developed and implemented by the Puerto Rico Tourism Company that follow the U.S. Travel Association health and safety guideline, along with locally enforced measures.
Here’s what you need to know: The Puerto Rico National Guard is assisting with health screenings of all arriving passengers, including offering rapid COVID-19 testing. Arriving passengers may be asked to self-quarantine for 14 days should they not test negative.
Leaving the airport, certified transportation carriers are properly disinfecting vehicles and have hand sanitizer available. Drivers are wearing gloves and face coverings are mandatory for drives and passengers.
Thoroughly sanitized properties that follow Puerto Rico Tourism Company standards will be certified with certification seals. Properties are also conducting temperature checks, screening symptoms and disinfecting luggage in reception areas upon entry. Further, guests will receive a health and safety guide detailing the specialized measures implemented by each property. While hotels may operate at full capacity, hotel pools are capped at 50 percent capacity within curfew hours. Furniture, chairs, tables and surfaces are being sanitized continuously. Fitness centers and spas are open, except for saunas.
Note: The use of masks is mandatory, as well as social distancing, in public spaces.
Venues will reopen in phases, with face masks and social distancing enforced, and, in accordance with the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s guidance for large events and mass gatherings. As of June 16, drive-in and open-air events can take place with limited capacity, and on July 1, indoor space venues such as the Puerto Rico Convention Center will reopen.
Good to know: The Ponce and Aguadilla airports will be reopening on July 6. There are currently 10 airlines operating on the Island but some airlines had to reduce capacity due to COVID-19.
