Luxury river cruise leader AmaWaterways is preparing for a major leadership shift that marks a new era for the company, but it’s keeping its iconic founders close to the helm.
Rudi Schreiner, who co-founded AmaWaterways in 2002 and has served as CEO since the beginning, will step into the role of chairman of the board effective July 1. The company’s current president, Catherine Powell, will take over as CEO.
“We are so excited about what we have been building — internationally with new markets, new passengers and, frankly, a whole new generation of river cruisers,” said Schreiner. “I am delighted that we are investing in the kind of leadership Catherine brings to the company. It’s a real inflection point, and I couldn't be prouder.”
Company co-founder Kristin Karst will remain a board member and continue her work as Global Brand Ambassador.
“Rudi and I poured our hearts into building AmaWaterways — a company shaped by passion, innovation and strong personal connections,” Karst said. “As we take this next step forward, we’re thrilled to welcome Catherine as CEO. Her global experience and leadership style reflect the values that have guided us from the beginning.”
Powell joined AmaWaterways as President earlier this year and brings with her an extensive track record from leadership roles at Disney and Airbnb.
“This is a dynamic moment of both growth and transformation for AmaWaterways and for the river cruising industry writ large,” she said. “I am honored to be taking the mantle from Rudi and steering this incredible company into its next exciting chapter.”
The leadership evolution comes at a time of continued growth for AmaWaterways, which now boasts 31 ships across Europe, Southeast Asia, Africa, Egypt and Colombia. Backers at L Catterton, including Director Jennifer Reid and Managing Partner Marc Magliacano, signaled strong support for the leadership change and the company’s growth outlook.
“We are confident that Catherine’s deep experience in the travel industry and track-record of growth and success… make her uniquely suited to guide the company forward,” said Magliacano.
