Aurora Expeditions has opened bookings for its first-ever “Antarctic Direct: Fly the Drake Fly/Fly Women’s Only Expedition” in 2027.
Lola Akinmade Åkerström, an international bestselling author, keynote speaker and travel photographer, will be hosting the expedition and she will be joined by special guest and former NASA astronaut Dr. Sandra H. “Sandy” Magnus aboard the Sylvia Earle. This journey, says Aurora Expeditions, celebrates the power of women in exploration, storytelling and environmental conservation.
Having photographed and reported from over 80 countries, Åkerström's work has graced the pages of numerous publications. Recognized as a “Hasselblad Heroine,” she has received numerous accolades, including being named on the “Conde Nast Traveler Women Who Travel Power List,” “Newsweek Future of Travel Award for Storytelling,” MIPAD 100 (Most Influential People of African Descent), and the “Travel Pulse Most Influential Woman in Travel” award.
“This is more than a trip; it’s a community of women coming together to explore one of the most pristine places on the planet,” said Åkerström. “I’m honored to host this transformational journey and help foster new stories, friendships and memories in the awe-inspiring landscapes of Antarctica.”
Departing February 23, 2027, during the late Antarctic summer, which is a prime time for wildlife activity and dramatic landscapes, this expedition promises stunning scenery, from glaciers to penguins, all set against golden polar sunsets. Participants will fly both ways across the Drake Passage, maximizing their time on the seventh continent.
Whether it’s someone’s first polar voyage or their next great adventure, this experience is designed by women, led by women and for women, offering camaraderie, courage and connection in one of the remotest settings on the planet. Limited spots are available.
