Cunard Line announced that it's new ship setting sail in 2024 will be named "Queen Anne." The new vessel will be Cunard's 249th ship in its history and joins Queen Mary 2, Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth within Cunard's modern fleet. It will be the first time since 1999 that Cunard will operate four ships at sea.
The storied brand, which announced the name in a dramatic YouTube video on Tuesday morning, said that the name “Queen Anne” celebrates Cunard’s rich heritage, royal history and refined status. The ship will join a contemporary fleet with names that honor each "Queen Regnant over the last millennium," the line's press release noted.
Name Decision
Cunard said its team "explored multiple naming options" and tapped British historian, author and television presenter Kate Williams to assist in the detailed research prior to the official name decision.
"It is so exciting that the fourth ship of the fleet will be named after Queen Anne," said Williams. "She has a fascinating tale to tell—one of queenship, unity of developing constitutional monarchy, a golden age of the arts. She was an inspiring woman, wildly popular with her people. She should be celebrated."
Cunard said the new Queen Anne will offer re-imagined Cunard signature spaces, plus introduce some new guest experiences for dining, culture and entertainment. The ship's design style will include elements of both past and present. Decor will feature bold color tones yet retain a level of sophistication, the line said. In addition, Cunard plans to introduce a new livery with the launch of this ship.
“I am absolutely delighted to welcome Queen Anne, the fourth ship to Cunard’s fleet," said Sture Myrmell, president, Carnival U.K., the Carnival Corporation group that includes Cunard Line and P&O Cruises. "This marks a very special moment in Cunard’s 182-year history and showcases Cunard’s exciting global plans for the future."
Cunard plans to reveal more new details about the new ship over the next few weeks and months. Queen Anne’s maiden season of voyages will open for sale in May, with the ship’s first sailings in early 2024.
