Good to know: Family Cruises are designed to help families bond with fun yet educational activities for all ages. While each cruise is based on the chosen barge’s Classic Cruise itinerary, families can substitute up to four of the classic excursions with hand-picked experiences that cater to everyone’s interests, whether that's cycling through vineyards and exploring villages or indulging in locally inspired meals and meeting regional artisans. Family Cruises are available across the entire fleet, with educational itinerary highlights including:
- “Chateau Guédelon – Medieval Castle Construction Project” (L’Art de Vivre) – Deep within the Guédelon forest in Burgundy, 50 master craftsmen are building a castle from the ground up using only medieval tools and techniques. This one-of-a-kind construction project offers a glimpse into the past.
- “MuséoParc Alésia” (L’Impressionniste) – In the heart of Burgundy, this journey takes visitors through one of the most famous battles—the clash between Julius Caesar and the Gallic leader Vercingetorix. This interactive museum brings history to life with engaging exhibits, archeological reconstructions and hands-on activities.
- “Venice Natural History Museum” (La Bella Vita) – Situated on the Grand Canal, the Museo di Storia Naturale di Venezia is a treasure trove of natural history, with over 700 million years of animal, plant and fossil specimens. It’s an ideal visit for curious minds, where young and old alike can learn about Venice’s history from prehistoric times to the present.
- “Oppidum d’Ensérune – Pre-Roman Hilltop Settlement” (Anjodi) – Explore the ancient Oppidum d’Ensérune, a UNESCO World Heritage Site offering panoramic views of the Béziers countryside. This archeological site dates back 2,300 years, with its unique geometric field patterns and excavations revealing ruins, ancient trade routes and a wealth of historical artifacts.
As part of all Family Cruises, European Waterways offers complimentary equipment such as safety gates, highchairs, travel cots, children’s bikes and helmets, and car seats upon request. Whilst parents and grandparents can feast on a four-course culinary journey with fine wines, separate child-friendly menus and mealtimes are welcomed by the chef.
