Silversea has announced a new leadership training academy designed to recruit and develop high-quality talent to join its expedition team. Expedition teams are on every voyage and guide guests in lectures, workshops, Zodiac trips, nature walks, activities focusing on destination’s local wildlife, biology, anthropology, geology, history, and more.
Training begins with remote webinar sessions that focus on different aspects of working on a Silversea expedition cruise, including life at sea and guest relations. Practical experience training deals with the fundamentals of boat handling, first aid, and safety at sea courses and certification. Trainees will spend around six weeks on the newly refurbished Silver Cloud when the ship joins the expedition fleet mid-November.
Aboard Silver Cloud, core skills will be developed through hands-on training. Attention will also be given to cross training in various academic disciplines, environmental and ecological knowledge, sustainability protocols, and cultural sensitivity. Participants will learn from experienced staff as well as additional educators that will be traveling on board the ship.
After successfully completing a tiered system of increasing responsibility, participants will have the opportunity to work the remainder of the Antarctic season as members of the expedition team and, ultimately, on expedition voyages to other regions of the world.
Conrad Combrink, Silversea’s vice president of expedition planning & strategic development, said that the company wants to attract candidate who are knowledgeable and passionate, and prepare them for a career aboard a ship where they will guide guests in understanding the local history, culture and wildlife.
Silversea has a fleet of small luxury ships that sail to over 900 destinations on all seven continents.
