Starting in 2019, travelers can go from Nuremberg to Budapest, biking during the day and staying on a river cruise at night. The Danube River Cruise: Nuremberg to Budapest is the newest offering from VBT Bicycling and Walking Vacations and Emerald Waterways.
Guests will disembark one of Emerald Waterways’ “Star-Ships” during the day and bike Europe’s longest riverside bike path, the EuroVelo6. Along the way, bikers will pass through hills, forests, wine country and Europe’s bike-friendly cities.
The bike path runs through easy riverside terrain with some mild climbing. Rides are generally on paved or gravel bike paths, both in urban and rural areas. Bikers will visit medieval hamlets, Baroque towns and spend full days in Vienna and Budapest. Along the way, travelers can taste Austria’s Wachau Valley wines and Bavarian beers brewed at local abbeys.
A highlight of the trip is the day in Vienna. Here they can bike Danube Island, an easy 13-mile strip with scenic views, or they can take the longer option and bike to Schönbrunn Palace, an old Habsburg home.
Every evening, guests will step back onto the ship for cocktails, dinner and evening activities. Guests who do not want to bike will also have the option of taking one of the ship’s included side-trips, such as a guided walking tour that showcases one of the Danube’s oldest bridges.
