It's safe to say that life as we know it would not exist without the inventive endeavours of Finland. The sauna is the first thing that springs to mind, but also ice skates, safety reflectors and the heart rate monitor.
But now a new and revolutionary concept has reaffirmed the Finnish flair for creation: the skiing hotel.
Designed to aid those Northern Lights hunters unwilling to leave the comfort of their hotel room, the Aurora Wilderness Camp huts are mounted on large skis, allowing them to be towed across the Arctic plains of Finnish Lapland.
Each of the three mobile cabins comes with a large double bed beneath a transparent roof (for reviewing the Aurora), a table, a lavatory and a gas heater with thermostat.
Guests will also be provided with snowshoes and kicksleds, should they wish to venture out and explore the area: an expanse of tundra in the northernmost reaches of Finland, around four miles (6km) east of Kilpisjärvi.
The local guides, who transport guests out to the remote cabins via snowmobile, also teach them how to build campfires and grill local sausages before leaving for the night (but not before dropping off a healthy supply of snacks and hot drinks).

The cabins will operate until the snow and ice begin to melt in mid-April. Bookings will then reopen for January 2019.
The Aurora Wilderness Camp cabins are available to book through Off the Map Travel; itineraries are tailor-made, so prices vary.
“The wilderness surrounding Kilpisjärvi is known for its remote and uninterrupted Arctic tundra,” says Jonny Cooper, founder of Off the Map Travel and Arctic travel expert.
“Away from any manmade light pollution, it is here that that the wilderness camp is placed for the winter, giving guests the best possible opportunity to experience the Northern Lights and simply enjoy the silence of the Arctic plains.”
