Off the Map Travel is giving travelers the chance to chase down the Northern Lights in a new All Day Aurora itinerary in Svalbard, Norway. To help increase your odds of finding the lights, guests will travel north and stay at the Funken Lodhe, a new luxury accommodation on the Island of Svalbard. The offer is available from November to late January, when the winter sun doesn’t rise above the horizon.
The location is key: Unlike other Arctic travel opportunities further south, the sun in Svalbard’s winter is at least six degrees below the horizon, which means it could potentially be dark all day, giving guests the possibility to experience the Northern Lights any time of day or night.
The winter, when the trip is available, produces snow-covered arctic tundra and lasting night skies, which is ideal for hunting the aurora, Off the Map says.
Funken Lodge, which reopened earlier this year after a multi-year renovation, has 88 guestrooms and the Funktionærmessen Restaurant. The menu here is based on a sharing concept, and consists of generous portions that can be split between friends; expect dishes such as king crab from Finnmark, dry-aged meat and reindeer from the neighborhood.
Off the Map travel gives travelers the chance to customize their excursions. Pricing includes all transfers, accommodations at the new Funken Lodge, activities such as dog sledding, snow shoeing and ice cave tours, a Northern Lights dinner, and a Snowcat Northern Lights adventure.
