Set on the fringes of Costa Rica’s Arenal Volcano (the world’s third most active volcano), Nayara Resorts just opened a sanctuary for sloths and other jungle wildlife. The property began with only two sloths in residence; since, then sanctuary has grown into a haven for more than 15 of the sleepy, peaceful, tree-borne creatures.
The sanctuary is also a home for an array of bird species, reptiles, amphibians and other tropical wildlife. Colorful macaws perching on guests’ terraces are not an uncommon occurrence, and tree frogs and hummingbirds can be seen throughout the property.
The resort itself has just 50 private casitas (bungalows), each with private terraces, outdoor showers and Jacuzzi tubs for two. The recent January expansion of Nayara Springs provides an additional 35 luxury villas with views of the Arenal Volcano and the surrounding National Park. Each villa contains a private pool fed by a mineral hot springs, a private garden with exterior shower, four-poster bed wrapped in soft cottons, and indoor and outdoor sitting areas. Villas at Nayara Springs include a personal host, daily breakfast, fresh fruit delivered daily, cocktail snacks, mini-bar selections, Wi-Fi throughout the property, movies and laundry service.
The greater resort has five dining options, two bars and a café. Offsite activities at Nayara include:
- Volcano tours
- Hikes to Rio Celeste
- Arenal hanging bridges tours
- Horseback riding to La Fortuna waterfall
