Botswana’s Wilderness Mombo has further enhanced its guest experiences with recent additions led by Artichoke Interior Design, including a new fire deck, the creation of a series of intimate dining pods and a walk-in wine cellar. These new areas have expansive views over the surrounding plains, and offer options from which to enjoy Mombo’s food and wine offering.
The new dining pods have been carefully positioned as a natural extension of the camp to maximize the views across the Mombo floodplain. They also offer guests a variety of flexible dining locations, from romantic settings to soulful meals enjoyed with family and friends. This offers an ideal environment to showcase Mombo’s food culture, which is relevant to its surroundings and centered around traditional African ingredients.
Collaborating with local farmers and artisans, and thereby reducing the camp’s “foodprint”, Mombo’s menu celebrates locally sourced heritage ingredients, such as baobab, millet, ditloo (black eyed peas) and morogo, similar to kale. Executive Chef Tonderai Chipfupi has introduced new additions to the lunch menu, including a Chief’s Platter and a Lechwe Haven Platter. The Chief’s Platter celebrates Botswana’s slow-braised beef dish, Seswaa, while the Lechwe Haven Platter incorporates African flavors of mini pumpkin and sorghum salad, madila (African yogurt) and truffle fries with a dollop of baobab mayo.
Mombo’s new walk-in wine cellar was manufactured onsite by local Botswana furniture manufacturer, WoodLogic. Wilderness’ celebrated wine concept is intrinsically linked to the company’s positive impact, with wines sourced from smaller, sustainable, often family-owned wine estates including Delaire Graff Estate and Ken Forrester Vineyards. Alfred Muswaka, Wilderness Mombo Sommelier, hosts informative and entertaining wine-tasting sessions in the cellar, sharing and celebrating Mombo’s curated African wine selection with guests. He notes that “as a leading conservation and hospitality company, our wine selection focuses on Fair Trade producers and sustainable farms which share our values, producing top-class wines that are truly well received by our guests”.
Sister camp Wilderness Little Mombo offers an exclusive safari experience for up to eight guests. Recent developments here include a new wine cellar and fire deck set closer to the main area. The previous fire deck has been repurposed into a new private dining space. The seating pods alongside the pool now feature shade roofs.
