Ever since the Hollywood jetset put the Italian fishing village of Portofino on the celebrity circuit, the Splendido has encapsulated its seaside glamor. The hotel became part of what is now the Belmond brand in 1986, and sister hotel Splendido Mare opened in 1998 in a building on the piazzetta that had been the village’s first osteria. Now this boutique property is getting a redesign by Paris-based FESTEN Architecture.
When it reopens in June 2020, Belmond Splendido Mare will show off a makeover of its 14 guest rooms and public spaces. The inspiration for the new look is Italian mid-century modern design and Portofino’s maritime heritage. Room decor will create the feel of a traditional fishing boat, with nautical accents like headboards crafted with braided ropes by noted textile designer Véronique de Soultrait. Accommodations will be decorated with vintage pieces (like armchairs by Paolo Buffa), original commissioned artwork, Murano glass lamps, and fabrics by Loro Piana and Rubelli. Decked out with white and yellow geometric tiles, the bathrooms are inspired by the cabins on Santa Margherita beach. The hotel’s color palette will reflect the colors of Liguria: terra-cotta, sea green, and amber.
Guests of Belmond Splendido Mare have access to the facilities at sister property Belmond Hotel Splendido, including the spa, gardens and saltwater infinity pool. Part of LVMH, the 40-year-old Belmond brand encompasses 46 properties across 26 countries, and includes three luxury safari lodges, two river cruises, and seven luxury trains, alongside iconic hotels like Belmond Copacabana Palace.
