Ace Hotel has announced that it will be opening its first property in Asia, Ace Hotel Kyoto, in winter 2019. Kengo Kuma will serve as the principle architect for this project (some of his top works include the Asakusa Culture and Tourism Center in Tokyo and the Nagasaki Prefectural Art Museum; he was also selected to design Tokyo's Olympic Stadium for the 2020 Games). The hotel will serve as a “cultural hub,” according to the hotel, and will be part of the redevelopment of Shin-Puh-Kan, a large shopping center with an outdoor atrium.
The hotel will be part-located in a renovated historic building—erected in the 1920s as the Kyoto Central Telephone Office—and part-located in a new-build. The neighborhood around the hotel sits on the former grounds of the imperial palace, rumored to once have been the home of Japanese samurai. According to the company, Ace Hotel Kyoto will incorporate the “spirit of the neighborhood” in its design, including “its history of art, architecture and culture.”
For travelers looking to explore the city, nearby, they will find the Nishiki Market, the Museum of Kyoto and the Kyoto Art Center.
Specifics for the hotel are not yet available, as Ace Hotel did not comment on the number of guestrooms or dining venues and could not specify what (if any) spa or fitness facilities there would be.
Ace Hotel has properties in Seattle (its first location), New Orleans, Pittsburgh, Chicago, Los Angeles, London, Palm Springs, New York, Portland and London.
