On Thursday, Ace Hotel Kyoto opened its doors for a preview period, welcoming guests to the brand's first hotel in Asia. Travelers can expect a vibrant lobby, garden courtyard, a dedicated gallery, the first Stumptown Coffee Roasters Coffee Shop in Japan and flexible event spaces. Ace Hotel Kyoto will also have three restaurants from by chef-partners, Naomi Pomeroy, Marc Vetri and Wes Avila. During the preview period, the hotel will offer special menus from two restaurants—alongside the full launch of Stumptown—followed by an official grand opening for the 213-room hotel and all three restaurants later this year.
Ace Hotel Kyoto is located in a building that’s part historic structure (a 1926 building once home to Kyoto Central Telephone Company) and part new-build. The structure also incorporates a large ground-floor marketplace that connects directly to the Kyoto subway line. Good to know: Ace Hotel Kyoto is near cultural sites like Nishiki Market, the Museum of Kyoto and Kyoto Art Center, and surrounded by classic shops such as Kamesuehiro (a 200-year-old confectionery store), Shoyeido (a 12th-generation, family-run incense purveyor) and Miyawaki Baisenan (a store specializing in traditional folding fans, which opened in 1823).
Ace Hotel Kyoto also has original art and custom furnishings from artists and craftsmen based in Japan and the U.S., including a large-scale textile piece by the Kagoshima-based Shobu Gakuen artist community, hanging above check-in. The gallery space and bar are lined with sculptural tiles from Shigaraki; Noren curtains and banners by celebrated nonagenarian artist Samiro Yunoki—who also created the hotel’s logo and font—are displayed around the hotel.
PIOPIKO
Beyond the first Stumptown Coffee Roasters coffee shop in Japan, Ace Hotel Kyoto will be home to PIOPIKO, a cocktail bar and taco lounge by award-winning chef Wes Avila, overlooking the lobby, and Mr. Maurice's Italian, an Italian-American osteria by James Beard Award-winning chef Marc Vetri, serving pasta and pizza from the wood-burning oven on the rooftop patio. An all-day refined American restaurant by James Beard Award-winning chef Naomi Pomeroy is slated to open later in the year, located adjacent to the garden courtyard.
Guests staying in entry-level rooms can expect a king-sized bed, window seats, a Tivoli radio and a turntable by TEAC. All rooms have original artwork by Samiro Yunoki and a custom Pendelton blanket, while some rooms have a Gibson guitar. Bathrooms feature slate tiles and natural ash wood ceilings and come with a soaking tub and separate shower. The top suite is the. Ace Suite, which has a separate dining, bar and living area and a double vanity in the bathroom.
Ace Hotel Kyoto is the newest member of the Ace family, joining Seattle, Portland, New York, Palm Springs, Downtown LA, London, Pittsburgh, New Orleans and Chicago.
