Alohilani Resort Waikiki Beach unveiled a 50-by-75-foot “Greetings From Hawaii” mural last Friday. That same day the resort kicked off the 10-day POW! WOW! Hawaii art festival.
The “Greetings from Hawaii” installation is the 34th entry in a cross-country mural project by artist Victor Ving and photographer Lisa Beggs. As part of their “Greetings Tour,” the duo has been traveling the country, creating vintage postcard-style murals wherever they go, with the goal of completing one in all 50 states. The “Greetings from Hawaii” mural is Ving’s largest yet and his first ground application. It can be viewed from Swell Pool & Bar, Alohilani’s seascape pool deck and guest towers.
The resort will also host over 100 artists during POW! WOW! Hawaii, which began February 8 and will run until February 17. Last Friday night, attendees celebrated the festival’s opening night party at Swell Pool & Bar, where Hawaii-born Matthew and Roxanne Ortiz of Wooden Wave debuted their first hotel mural, a whimsical tropical tree house.
The international POW! WOW! arts festival, now in its ninth year, brings together contemporary artists from around the world to create communal works and live installations. POW! WOW! organizes gallery shows, lecture series, schools for art and music, mural projects, large creative space called Lana Lane Studios, concerts and live art installations across the globe.
