Belmond has opened its seventh property in Italy, The Belmond Castello di Casole, a country retreat in the heart of rural Tuscany, connecting guests with local culture and heritage. Built in the year 998 and originally named Querceto Manor, the property, which we've been keeping tabs on for some time, was restored by the Bargagli family in the 20th century and sits within its own medieval village, showcasing original Etruscan artifacts and architecture.
As the Tuscan sister hotel to Belmond Villa San Michele in Florence, the castle hotel and grounds, are located in a nature reserve between Siena and Florence. A private road ascends to the estate, situated atop a hill with views of the surrounding villages and farmland that include olive groves and vineyards that produce the property’s own olive oil and private-label wines.
Spa and Dining
Located in the former medieval village on the grounds, the Essere spa offers a place to connect with Etruscan history and disconnect from modern-day living. Set in the old wine cellar, the space has original stone walls and historic artifacts dating back to the fourth century. The spa terrace is a space to relax and enjoy sunrise yoga with views over the golden valley.
Treatments using local ingredients (think: rosemary, grape seed, olive oil) and ancient Etruscan methods reflect are available. The Divino Ritual is inspired by Belmond Castello di Casole’s vineyards, offering a red wine bath and hydro-massage enriched with red wine extracts.
Belmond Castello di Casole's F&B options serve a mix of local Tuscan and Italian flavors. Old Tuscan traditional dishes with modern influences can be found at Tosca, using ingredients grown in the hotel gardens. With classic marble detailing, Bar Visconti is named after previous occupier and director, Luchino Visconti. Overlooking the infinity pool, the bar is a place to enjoy the sunset or look at the stars, according to the hotel.
Accommodations
Each of the Castello’s 39 suites include original stone flooring, terracotta colors and traditional alabaster from the local region of Volterra, reflecting the estate’s history. Suites located in the original 10th-century medieval tower include original fireplaces and stone wall detailing.
Wild and Rustic Tuscany
The acres surrounding the property provide a backdrop for a range of activities, offering access to the region’s lesser-known attractions. Guests are invited to head out with the estate rangers for a sunset safari to see the wildlife, including deer, wild boars, pheasants, foxes and hares. Other options range from truffle hunting to hiking on any of the estate's many trails or cycling along the tracks amongst the vineyards.
Guests can also journey between Belmond Villa San Michele and Belmond Castello di Casole for a varied Tuscan experience.
