A new year brings new travel resolutions. Why not plan an adventure to a perennial "Happiest Country on Earth"? One of the most talked-about hotel projects of 2018 is the Six Senses lodges which will be opening in Bhutan in August. Luxury adventurers will be able to embark on a circuit around the majestic Himalayan Kingdom, hitting up the five Six Senses lodges in Bhutan’s western and central valleys, each designed around a specific theme. (Note that three lodges will be opening this summer with two more to follow by the end of 2018.)
Of course, it’s also possible to just visit one of the lodges, or Six Senses can create a customized itinerary in all five locations (Thimpu, Punakha, Gangtey, Bumthang and Paro). As stated by Six Senses: “The lodges range in size and facilities, however our focus embraces the Six Senses guiding principles which include spa, wellness, healthy eating, comfort in sleep in addition to a journey of self-discovery within Bhutan’s beauty of spirituality, culture and nature.”
Start your journey in Bhutan’s capital of Thimpu—the world’s only national capital without traffic lights. Named “Palace in the Sky,” Six Senses Thimpu lodge is perched on a hill overlooking Thimphu Valley and the 170-foot-high Buddha. Next up: Punakha Valley, the warmest of the Six Senses destinations in Bhutan, where the lodge is referred to as “the Flying Farmhouse amidst the Rice Fields” and has a rustic rural vibe.
At Gangtey, a settlement in a glacial valley known for the its population of endangered black-necked cranes, the lodge is called the “Traditional Birdwatching Bridge." Bumthang is the farthest location to the east, and the lodge is referred to as “a forest within a forest.” And last but not least: The lodge known as “Stone Ruins” in Paro Valley, famous for the “Tiger’s Nest” monastery.
