Located in the Bantry Bay residential area, just 10 minutes from the heart of Cape Town, Ellerman House is an elegant boutique hotel housed in a Cape Edwardian mansion that once was home to shipping magnates Sir John and Lady Ellerman. This year Ellerman House is celebrating its 25th anniversary with a big renovation that transformed the guest rooms, bathrooms, lounges and dining rooms. What’s more, the luxury property recently launched the new BAR ROC, complete with heart-stopping ocean views. It’s a contemporary space designed by Adam Court of Cape Town-based OKHA Interiors with a terrazzo floor and lots of brass.
The makeover touched all 11 rooms, two suites, and two three-bedroom villas. The idea was to modernize the interiors with all the 21st century functional elements, while staying true to the South African identity of Ellerman House. As quoted in the official press release, design advisor Nell Harris said, “Ellerman House is the Grande Dame of the Atlantic Seaboard. You don’t want to mess with her mood too much, but she did require some modernizing. Just a little lift here and there”. Think custom furniture, fabrics and art sourced locally from designers and artists.
This eye-catching bespoke décor can also be found in the lounge, living room and dining room. In fact, the hotel has a noteworthy South African art collection, spanning two centuries, which was recently showcased in a new book.
Note that like a private residence, Ellerman House is only open to hotel guests, assuring privacy and exclusivity. Facilities include a spa, fitness center, library, pool brandy lounge, Wine Gallery, and Champagne Cellar. A range of experiences can be arranged for guests including wine and art tours.
