Planning a winter getaway in the Swiss Alps? Here’s a tip. The Chedi Andermatt—which made a splash when it opened in December 2013—has unveiled a new penthouse pad called the Gotthard Suite. It’s named for the Gotthard pass, the famous 6,909-foot mountain pass connecting northern and southern Europe. (For centuries, it was a vital north-south trade and transit route through the Alps.) To quote the official press release, “With such historical importance, it only seemed fitting to name the new The Chedi Andermatt suite after the Gotthard pass.”
Decorated with oak and walnut paneling by Swiss designers Jaeggi Architekten, the suite measures 350 square meters (more than 3,700 square feet) and can accommodate up to 10 guests. Nice touches include the large wooden bathtub, a fireplace and floor-to-ceiling windows.
Like a private chalet, the Gotthard Suite caters to extended families and groups who want both privacy and access to the hotel’s facilities. Split over two levels, the suite has a living room and dining area, a kitchen, five bedrooms and five bathrooms. Perhaps the best part of all: There’s a spacious terrace overlooking the Hospen Valley.
Designed by Jean-Michel Gathy from Denniston Architects, The Chedi Andermatt combines Alpine style with Asian touches in the 123 rooms and suites. There’s an enormous spa and health club, a glass-roofed indoor pool paired with a heated outdoor pool, and several F&B outlets, including an authentic Japanese restaurant and the Wine & Cigar Library. The Chedi Andermatt is a member of Leading Hotels of the World.
