When Cocoa Island launched in 2002, it was the first private island in the Maldives for the COMO Group. (The Singapore-based hospitality company expanded in the country in 2014 with the opening of COMO Maalifushi, a family-focused resort in the remote Thaa Atoll.) Now, after a top-to-bottom overhaul, COMO Cocoa Island will show off a new look when it reopens on January 9, 2020. In a highly competitive hotel market with over-the-top amenities like underwater restaurants and astronomical observatories, the COMO Group has sought to emphasize simplicity and the natural beauty at Cocoa Island.
Wellness is a key hospitality tenet for COMO, so a main focus of the renovation was the spa facilities, where guests indulge in full- and half-day treatment programs. The COMO Shambhala Retreat comprises a full third of the island, and two of the four treatment rooms have been expanded as couples’ suites. There’s also a new Pilates studio alongside the yoga studio, which offers sweeping views over the lagoon. The hydrotherapy pool, used for water-based treatments, is billed as “among the most significant such facilities in The Maldives.” And the gym has also been renovated. Note that healthy COMO Shambhala Cuisine is available on all resort menus.
All 34 of the resort’s overwater villas were redesigned in a clean, contemporary style by Singapore-based Lekker Architects. The makeover incorporates naturally sourced materials like kajan thatch roofing. COMO Cocoa Island is a meditative retreat, and the newly designed accommodations— all equipped with platforms for direct lagoon access— reflect this.
