Guests can now take a half-day Bhutanese cooking class as part of COMO Hotels Bhutan properties' Himalayan Explorer itineraries. During the six- and seven-night itineraries, which include stays at both COMO Uma Paro and COMO Uma Punakha, participants will learn to cook traditional Bhutanese food from Tshering Lhaden, the executive chef of COMO Uma Paro and a native to Bhutan.
Those who choose to take the class will learn how to make a fermented yak cheese and chili dish known as ema datshi, a yak milk yogurt called dau, Bhutanese buckwheat noodles and momo yak dumplings. Guests will also use traditional utensils like the sume, designed to churn butter, and a tshome, similar to a mortar and pestle.
Tshering spent nearly a decade working at COMO Hotels and Resorts across the Caribbean and the Maldives. She came back to Bhutan in 2016 and created a traditional Bhutanese menu for COMO Uma Paro and COMO Uma Punakha.
COMO Uma Punakha will host the class in its al fresco kitchen. Using locally sourced vegetables, students will create a traditional Bhutanese meal and eat it on a terrace looking out on the Mo Chhu River.
The Himalayan Explorer itineraries also include private, guided trips around the Paro, Thimphu and Punakha valleys.
