Corinthia Hotels has announced the opening of a luxury hotel in Romania. The Grand Hotel du Boulevard is a historic-listed monument that commands the intersection of Avenue de la Victoire and the Boulevard Elisabeta in Bucharest. Dating from 1867, the grande dame has a striking facade and sumptuous lobby (think: marble columns, ornately carved walls, glass skylight). But the hotel was last used over a decade ago. Now, after a top-to-bottom refurbishment, the Grand Hotel du Boulevard will be reborn as the Corinthia Grand Hotel du Boulevard Bucharest on December 1, 2019 (the reopening will coincide with Romania’s National Day).
This restoration project is in line with Corinthia’s expansion plans across Europe. Currently, the Malta-based luxury hotel group is in the midst of renovating the iconic Grand Hotel Astoria in Brussels, acquired in 2016, with an eye on reopening in 2020. Likewise, Corinthia revived a trio of 19th century European grand hotels by refurbishing what’s now known as the Corinthia Hotel London, Corinthia Hotel Budapest (formerly the Grand Hotel Royal) and Corinthia Hotel St. Petersburg.
When the Corinthia debuts in the Romanian capital, it will have 50 rooms and suites, an array of restaurants, a grand ballroom, and meeting/event rooms. The refurbishment is expected to start in Q2 2018.
A subsidiary of International Hotel Investments p.l.c., Corinthia Hotels is a collection of hotels founded by the Pisani family of Malta in 1962. In addition to this new management contract in Bucharest, Corinthia operates hotels in Malta, Tripoli, Khartoum, Lisbon, Prague, Budapest, St. Petersburg and London.
