Hotelier Ian Schrager’s EDITION hotel brand is coming to Spain with the arrival of The Barcelona EDITION. As with all EDITION hotels, Barcelona property will offer a unique design, personalized service and entertainment offerings “all under one roof.”
The Barcelona EDITION will be located in El Born in the center of the famed Ciutat Vella district. Nestled between the waters of the Mediterranean Sea and l’Eixample neighborhood, Barcelona’s boutique shopping epicenter, The Barcelona EDITION is adjacent to the Santa Caterina Market and within 15 minutes of the beach and the Barcelona Cruise Port. The hotel is also set within walking distance to several top landmarks, including the Picasso museum, Antoni Gaudí’s Palau Güell and the Basilica de Santa Maria del Mar.
Under the direction of Schrager, alongside the popular Spanish interior designer Lázaro Rosa-Violán the hotel brings together the character of a historic environment with a simple design sensibility. The hotel will have 100 rooms and suites, three restaurants, two bars, a roof terrace with plunge pool and a lobby.
The hotel’s public spaces will be activated day and night, starting with the lobby. Upon entering through the main doors, guests will find a double-height lobby space dominated by a blue Eric Schmitt chandelier and a selection of furniture pieces originally designed by Salvador Dalí and Antoni Gaudí. To the right will be a black marble and walnut wood reception desk, and, to the left, a lobby lounge area invites guests to enjoy a more laid-back ambience set against the backdrop of the bar-restaurant.
Composed of two spaces, the lobby lounge includes a selection of furniture pieces with varying styles. The first of the two spaces, aims to give the impression of a more traditional living room ambience with four Christian Liaigre chairs and a games table in the center, as well as a pair of Yves Klein blue armchairs designed by Gerrit Thomas Rietveld. The second space has been conceived as a more intimate lounge area with low ceilings and large sheepskin armchairs. An illuminated blue art piece by Carlos Coronas is framed by the space to the rear and combines with dark wood wall finishes and off-white fabrics.
A lobby bar will serve locally produced vermouth, craft beer and sherry; it will also tie the hotel’s reception with an informal all-day dining restaurant overseen, alongside the hotel’s two further dining concepts, by partner chef, Sebastián Mazzola, formerly creative director of the Adrià Group. Seating 87 guests, Bar Veraz offers a menu of dishes that focus on seasonal ingredients. In the mornings, the space offers guests a light a la carte breakfast experience. For lunch and dinner, the menu includes an interpretation of Mediterranean specialties complemented by a regionally focused wine list including more than 30 wines from local vineyards.
A fresh incarnation of The London EDITION’s Punch Room will occupy the mezzanine floor. Accessed by a spiral staircase of steel, marble and wood, this space overlooks the main lobby and dining area and offers a menu of long drinks, punches and sangrias served from vintage silver bowls as well as a curated menu of individual cocktails alongside a selection light bites to complement the drinks offering.
Located in the basement floor of the hotel, Cabaret is a restaurant for the darker hours with a "sultry" lounge area, cocktail bar and food experience based around a tasting menu concept. As guests come to the end of their main courses, the long, velvet curtains at the far end of the dining room will be drawn back to reveal the stage, framed by a large archway and ready to expose the night’s entertainment, playing out into the early hours of the morning. A cocktail bar sits at one end of the space while the lounge area sets the scene for a more intimate ambience away from the main club area.
Set to be a daytime social gathering place, The Roof, located on the 10th floor of The Barcelona EDITION, offers a panoramic view over the city and offers food and drinks served all day. The kitchen offers small plates of light Latin American dishes with an Asian influence, designed to be shared. The cocktail bar offers a seasonal drink menu as well as healthy juices and smoothies, surrounded by lounge seating and sunbeds situated around the plunge pool. For the cooler days and evenings, service continues come rain or shine as the glass sliding walls come to a close to offer guests one of the only year-round rooftops in Barcelona.
The 100 rooms and suites have city views over Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter, Santa Caterina Market and the district of El Born. Beds are adorned with EDITION’s Signature imported luxury Anichini linens and custom-designed furniture with fabrics such as embossed Spanish leather headboards. The walls of the bedrooms are clad in walnut paneling, evocative of the shutters that dominate the old town’s street facades, and the floors are a whitened oak herringbone parquet. Bathrooms are finished in white Sivec marble, detailed with contrasting brass hardware. Bathrooms also have custom-scented Le Labo amenities. Two penthouses offer a “home-from-home” concept with their own private terraces equipped with lounge areas and dining furniture for private al-fresco meals and relaxation under the sun.
The gym is open 24 hours and offers a wellness and meditation space where guests can rest and practice tai chi, yoga and cardio.
