After Hurricane Irma’s destruction in the Florida Keys last autumn, the islands have come back to life. Hotels and attractions have opened in time for the popular winter season, when visitors flock to the Florida sunshine to escape the arctic cold sweeping through much of the nation. In the latest accommodations news, The Moorings Village in Islamorada has reopened after being rebuilt faster than expected.
Situated on a former 18-acre coconut plantation, the property was founded in 1936 as a private estate and today offers 18 one-, two- and three-bedroom villas equipped with living rooms, kitchens and dining rooms. Measuring 1,100 feet, the natural sandy beach is one of the largest in the Keys. From this palm-fringed stretch of sand, guests can try paddle boarding, kayaking, wind surfing and other water sports. There’s also a tennis court, a 80-foot lap pool, a Tesla charging station and hammocks strung throughout the property to indulge in the laid-back lifestyle of the Florida Keys.
Tip: Private fitness trainers, yoga classes, off-shore charters and sunset champagne cruises can be arranged. Good eats are abound in Islamorada; guests can try French fusion food at Pierre’s across the street or watch the sunset at the Morada Bay Beach Café. New for the season is the private chef package. The Moorings can arrange for a private chef to customize a three-course meal served in your villa. The dishes are paired with top-notch wines. Note that this package must be reserved seven days prior to arrival.
