The oldest hotel in Madrid is getting a new lease of life. Originally opened in 1886, the Gran Hotel Inglés has been completely restored by Hidden Away Hotels under the watchful artistic eye of the Rockwell Group. This historic icon will reopen on March 23 as a new luxury hotel and member of Leading Hotels of the World. Gran Hotel Inglés has a central location in the Spanish capital; it’s located in the Barrio de las Letras, near the Atocha Madrid train station and not from the the Puerta del Sol.
There will only be 48 rooms, decorated with hardwood floors, padded leather wall panels, and Art Deco details like bronze furniture and glass. Did we mention the bespoke armchairs and fabrics designed by David Rockwell? The Meller Suite has a private terrace with a jacuzzi, while the Presidential Suite is equipped with an antique bar and freestanding bathtub straight out of the 1920s. The numerous suites come with a host of perks like complimentary champagne.
A firm focus will be gastronomy, as Gran Hotel Inglés aims for the Lobo 8 restaurant to become one of the most popular hot spots in town. It’s all about fresh, seasonal ingredients and traditional cuisine with a contemporary twist. The hotel will also have a library with a fireplace, meeting and event space, two spa treatment rooms and a top-notch fitness center offering yoga, pilates, and personal training sessions with private instructors (upon request). The General Manager is Javier Polo, who previously served as director of operations at the prestigious Hotel Villa Magna in Madrid.
