Just in time for the winter ski season in the French Alps, the Grand Hotel du Soleil d’Or is slated to debut on December 6, 2019 in Megève. It’s not just the endless powdery pistes that draw international jetsetters to this pretty town. Nestled beneath Mont Blanc, this alpine playground has an authentic ambiance. What’s more, it’s developed a reputation for its fine après-ski hot spots and luxury hotels, like Les Fermes de Marie (Sibuet Hotel Group), Domaine du Mont d’Arbois (owned by the de Rotshchild family) and the Four Seasons. Now, another one is joining the mix.
The Grand Hotel du Soleil d’Or is not a new-build hotel: It first opened its doors in 1901, and now, nearly 120 years later, it’s being reborn as the 11th maison for the Millésime Collection, a French hospitality group which also has properties in Bordeaux, Arcachon and Champagne country. Housed in the original historic building, there are 16 rooms and suites that have been individually decorated. Adjacent, you’ll find three, four-bedroom chalets (Le Pionnier, Les Trois Champions and La Benne Rouge), conceived for families or groups of friends traveling together.
With its panoramic bar, the hotel is aiming to be the place to see and be seen. Sip cocktails dreamed up by bartender Elie Favreau and his team while taking in the views of the historic heart of Megève with the Alps as the backdrop. Nice touch: The bar will have a replica of the famous village fountain filled with champagne bottles. The restaurant will serve traditional mountain cuisine meant for sharing, while the La Chocolaterie will showcase creations by renowned chocolate maker Jean-Paul Hévin. Last but not least: The wellness space will offer a pool, hammam, sauna and spa treatments by Gemology.
