Grand Wailea, A Waldorf Astoria Resort, has unveiled details of its property-wide renovation led by New York-based design studio Tihany Design. The beachfront resort now sports refreshed dining venues inspired by Maui’s landscape, besides enhanced spaces. A new spa is slated to open this year, following the final phase of the renovation.
The recently renovated Botero Lounge is at the heart of the resort, housing prominent Botero sculptures from Grand Wailea’s 900-piece outdoor museum. Nine recently restored bronze sculptures accentuate the lounge, each flown in from Italy over 30 years ago. Mood lighting from oversized floor lamps creates a sense of extension from the main bar concept, enlivening the space surrounding the sushi counter and the accompanying intimate seating. Designed to tie into the lush landscape that surrounds it, the lounge is fully open-air with the exception of a canopy fixture that adds subtle structure to the otherwise fluid layout. Inspired by the Pacific Ocean, the color palette is anchored by an emerald bar counter, and accented shades of blue and pink.
‘Ikena, the resort’s signature indoor-outdoor breakfast buffet offers ocean views from every table. It has warm materials, a bright color palette and chandelier lanterns. The multi-level venue includes a large terrace opposite the lower courtyard overlooking the pools and gardens around the property, making it an ideal place for large-scale events.
The oceanfront ‘Ikena temporarily houses “The White Doves,” a large-scale installation by German multimedia artist Michael Pendry. The sculpture comrprises hundreds of 3D-printed acrylic origami birds suspended from the ceiling, enlivened by multimedia elements including a video of birds in flight accompanied by sounds of nature–all of which transform from day to night.
