Gurney’s Resorts' latest venture will have a much different feel than its existing three properties. On Tuesday, November 2, the company announced the acquisition of Sanctuary Camelback Mountain Resort and Spa in Paradise Valley, AZ. Scottsdale-based real estate investment company BB Hotels (formerly Berger Holdings) has partnered with New York-based Metrovest Equities and BLDG MGMT to purchase the resort, the transaction for which is expected to close in early November. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
Robert H. Castellini has owned Sanctuary Camelback Mountain Resort and Spa since 1992 and was responsible in concert with Westroc Hospitality for transforming the property into one of the most acclaimed resorts in the Southwest. Under new ownership, the property will remain fully operational as Sanctuary Camelback Mountain, a Gurney's Resort & Spa and Michael Surguine, general manager, will continue in his role to oversee the elevated resort experience.
“Our success was possible due to our phenomenal team. It has been an honor and privilege for my family to serve as stewards of this incredible Paradise Valley landmark,” said Castellini in a written statement. “We believe that Gurney’s Resorts fully appreciates this great honor and understands the importance of Sanctuary’s history and charm to Paradise Valley and to all our loyal patrons.”
Gurney’s Resorts and BB Hotels are currently reviewing all aspects of the resort in anticipation of a comprehensive renovation and property-wide refurbishments beginning in summer 2022. Sanctuary Camelback Mountain, a Gurney’s Resort & Spa will remain open throughout said transition and renovation.
The acquisition marks the first westward expansion for the independent hospitality brand whose current portfolio includes two resorts in Montauk, NY and one in Newport, RI—all three of which are located on the water. Gurney’s debut in the Scottsdale market, the company says, highlights the evolution of the area’s hospitality sector.
Sanctuary Camelback Mountain covers 53 acres of desert, sporting manicured grounds, gardens, hiking trails and such facilities as a 12,000-square-foot spa, fitness center, swimming pools and tennis courts. There are 109 casitas and suites, as well as eight private mountainside villas. With a culinary team led by Food Network star and executive chef Beau MacMillan, the Sanctuary’s dining offerings focus on seasonal menus that highlgiht fresh, local ingredients. Additionally, the resort has 10,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor event space, including a 250-capacity ballroom.
