A fashionable new boutique hotel is turning heads in Rio de Janeiro. JANEIRO—as the glam hideaway is known—is the pet project of Oskar Metsavaht, head of Osklen, the Brazilian fashion brand. Situated on the beach in the waterfront neighborhood of Leblon, JANEIRO embraces nature with its design and hospitality concept. As described by Harper’s Bazaar, “JANEIRO feels a bit like a Tulum eco-resort beamed down in the midst of Brazil’s seaside megacity.” Partly powered by solar electricity, JANEIRO is all about sustainable luxury, utilizing materials like organic cotton, reusable glass bottles, paper straws and natural toiletries by Granado. Even the bespoke blown glass lamps were crafted with recycled glass bottles.
As reported by Vogue Paris, which recommends JANEIRO as one of five new hotels to “see in the New Year with sunshine,” the eco-chic hotel was “decorated entirely by local artisans, who were in turn inspired by the beach and its many textures—water, sand and palm trees.”
The 53 guestrooms are billed as “apartments,” designed with an open floor plan and large windows for taking in the ocean vistas. In the bathrooms, the rainforest showers are positioned next to the glass so you can admire views of Ilhas Cagarras, the archipelago off Ipanema, while singing in the shower.
The nature theme continues in the restaurant which serves fresh, farm-to-table options. The official website explains that the menu was “inspired by the healthy lifestyle that reigns here and the easy-going food culture that underpins this perpetually relaxed city.” Last but not least: There’s a swimming pool on the roof where you can watch the sunset, cocktail in hand.
