In the first quarter of 2018, The Hotel St. George will finally open its doors in central Helsinki. The hotly anticipated property from Design Hotels will be housed in an historic building that has a special place in Finnish culture.
Dating back to the 1840s, the building was originally designed by renowned Finnish architect Onni Tarjanne, and it was once home to the Finnish Literature Society and the printing house for the first Finnish national newspaper. Now, the seven-story building that played a crucial role in Finnish culture has been restored to its glory days.
The Hotel St. George will have 148 rooms, five suites, and an array of public spaces including a wine room, poetry room, and a winter garden. Dining options will include the Restaurant Andrea, headed by Mehmet Gürs and Antto Melasniemi, offering high-end Finnish and Turkish cuisine; and St. George Bakery & Bar, a deli and coffee shop.
Each of the rooms and suites will have curated furniture and art, all handpicked by the Creative Director and Design Hotels Original Mirkku Kullberg. Kullberg spent the last two decades working in fashion and design, most notably as the CEO of Finnish furniture company Artek.
When the hotel opens, it will be the first in the region to offer guests an integrated wellness concept known as Care, which encompasses outdoor exercise, seasonal massage treatments, meditation sessions, and detoxification programs designed to alleviate stress. The hotel gym, titled The Playground, will give customers a new perspective on wellbeing of the mind and body.
Plus, its location on Vanha Kirkkopuisto (Church Park), also home to the city’s second oldest church that dates back to 1826, will put guests in close proximity to art galleries, boutiques, restaurants, bars, and cafes.
