Reykjavik got itself a new upscale boutique hotel this spring when ION City Hotel opened. The hotel, which is a sister property of ION Adventure Hotel (one hour outside of the city in Nesjavellir), has 18 rooms, including one City Suite and one Panoramic Suite. Best part? Guests can book them both to create the Penthouse Suite, which measures nearly 1,300 square feet.
Both the Standard Rooms and the Deluxe Rooms have a window-side sofa, while the Junior Suite has a balcony with a private sauna. The City Suite has a French balcony, a private indoor sauna and a living room with a dining table, and the Panorama Suite includes an indoor sauna, a bathroom with a table and chair, a guest bathroom, a dining table and a bar area, with the option of a bartender or chef on request. All guestrooms and suites include Bluetooth speakers and Wi-Fi.
The design-driven hotel was the responsibility of architecture duo Minarc, who are close friends of the owner, Sigurlaug Sverrisdóttir. They used Sverrisdóttir’s mother’s sweater pattern as inspiration throughout the hotel, in which they used textured aluminum and concrete.
Nearby, guests have access to the city’s museums, galleries, designer workshops and the Harpa concert hall. Note: Assistant General Manager Monika Sirvyte (monika@ioniceland.com) can help arrange any tour or activity the guest wishes, including whale watching, horseback riding, snowmobiling and visits to Blue Lagoon or to a glacier.
