Indonesia’s Bawah Reserve Launches Zero-Waste Weddings

Bawah Reserve, a private island resort in Indonesia, has launched a Zero-Waste Wedding concept for eco-conscious couples. Located on the Anambas Islands in the Riau Archipelago of Indonesia, Bawah Reserve’s private islands are ideal for newlyweds-to-be who are looking for barefoot luxury and privacy without compromising on their earth-conscious lifestyles.

Couples can rent the entire resort and its 36 villas, plus the newly unveiled Elang Private Residences, which is available exclusively for groups ranging from 10 to 20 guests.

On the day of the Zero-Waste Wedding ceremony, Bawah staff will handcraft bespoke bouquets and floral décor with native species for a beach ceremony.

Built using recycled natural materials, Bawah’s signature TreeTops restaurant serves Asian fusion dishes, while the Jules Verne bar, named after the adventure novelist, serves garden-to-glass cocktails with lagoon views. The resort’s wedding weekend menus use fresh, local ingredients including daikon, prawns, jackfruit and snapper. All leftover food is composted through the onsite waste management center, while any leftover glass is repurposed for use in the island’s water purification system.

Post-wedding activities include paddle boarding, kayaking, sailing, boat trips, hiking, star gazing, bird-watching, beachside cinema viewings, diving, snorkeling, turtle tagging, yoga and daily spa treatments. Couples will depart with a wedding gift from Bawah Reserve—traditional Indonesian batik robes to remind them of the special occasion.

Since its opening in 2018, Bawah Reserve has partnered with the Anambas Foundation to execute a sustainability mission that aims to preserve all 255 of the Anambas Islands through its three main pillars: Above (wildlife and forest conservation); Below (marine conservation); and Beyond (community education initiatives, women’s empowerment and integrated waste management systems). The island resort’s sustainability goals are met and as a result of the staff’ efforts to source local produce and materials, uplift its surrounding village communities, and invite guests to partake in initiatives such as turtle tagging, beach cleanups and reef rehabilitation dives. All of Bawah Reserve’s six islands, of which only two are occupied by resort accommodations and facilities, are powered by a renewable micro-grid, and the reserve is entirely plastic free.
