In northern Kenya’s Laikipia County, the 56,000-acre Loisaba conservancy—purchased by the Nature Conservancy in 2014—supports an important concentration of wildlife. It’s here where the Loisaba Tented Camp, part of the Elewana Collection, offers an eco-chic base for exploring the area. As we’ve previously reported, the camp’s setting is sublime, perched on an escarpment with views all the way to Mount Kenya from the clifftop infinity pool. There are 12 en-suite tents with a separate clutch of “star beds”—which can be rolled out onto a deck at night so you can sleep under the stars.
Beyond the terrific game drives and guided bush walks, the lodge is known for a slew of active experiences, including mountain biking, horseback riding, camel trekking and fishing. Now, they’ve added a running and trekking track to the mix. This should be music to the ears for those sporty guests who aren’t keen to miss a workout (particularly with the generous cuisine, plus Afternoon Tea, served while on safari!).
The new track is set within the electric fence that surrounds the camp. Choose one of three routes (blue is the easiest at one-mile long, while red follows sloping terrain and black is a challenging uphill and downhill course of one-and-a-half miles). While you take laps through the bush, you are treated to gorgeous views across the plains to Mount Kenya. An added bonus: Running and trekking partners can be arranged. Note: Before 8 a.m., guests should notify the staff prior to exercising to make sure that night wildlife are not still roaming close to the fence.
