Labotessa, a restored congressional church-turned-lifestyle hotel, is set to open this month in Cape Town. Originally built in the early 1700s, the seven-room property is one of the oldest buildings in South Africa and marks the debut project for Labotessa founders, Jan Fourie and Johan du Plessis.
Inspired by the buildings history and the city's European influences, design elements in the hotel aim to evoke 17th-century grandeur while local arts and antique pieces decorate the interior of Labotessa. Each of the hotel’s seven suites have private elevator access, a Juliet balcony and views of Lion’s Head and Table Mountain. An antique balustrade guides guests to reception on the mezzanine level, with views of the property’s classic fireplace, original chandelier and velvet armchairs.
The Governor Suite
The three-bedroom Governor Suite is named after Simon Van der Stel, the first governor of the Cape. At 3,230-square-feet, the suite spans two floors with views of Church Square, Signal Hill and Table Mountain. Located on the hotel’s top floor, the Governor Suite has such modern touches as a floating staircase and private plunge pool looking out through the balcony’s glass walls.
Additionally, the Governor Suite has a full kitchen equipped with Smeg appliances, a 10-person dining table and two lounge areas. A modern fireplace is flanked by a padded leather window seat. In the bedrooms, en-suite bathrooms with freestanding bathtubs overlook the city of Cape Town.
Six Signature Suites
Accessible via private elevator from the hotel’s mezzanine level, the Signature Suites have open plans. A palette of petrol blues, warm taupe and burnt orange is complemented by Persian rugs. High ceilings and French oak floors can be found in the 700-square-foot rooms, and en-suite bathrooms have blue subway tile and calacatta marble. Amenities include a French armoire with a hidden minibar outfitted with Smeg appliances and crystal flutes for celebrations. A round cocktail table, sofa and Juliet balcony create multi-use spaces for dining and lounging.
Starling’s
Starling’s, an all-day city café, will open its second location at Labotessa. Tables will spill out onto Church Square as part of a small courtyard garden and lead into the hotel’s Boutique fragrance shop.
