Is This the Lake District's Coolest New Hotel?

by Jade Conroy The Telegraph, September 5, 2017

The highly anticipated Another Place, The Lake hotel opened its doors on Ullswater Lake last week – a fitting time following the announcement that Lake District National Park (where the hotel is located) has been crowned a Unesco World Heritage Site.

The hotel, which is the first of a new brand of properties, has been conceived by Will Ashworth, the founder of ever-popular Watergate Bay, the chilled-out-by-stylish beach hotel popular with surfers, in Cornwall.

Another Place, The Lake, will follow in a similar vein, with the main focus on outdoor activities. Guests will be able to go wild swimming in Ullswater (there are wild swimming classes and clinics), kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding and sailing.

The ‘Swim Club’ is their take on a spa, with a 20-metre lake-view swimming pool, outdoor hot tub, sauna, cardio room and three treatment rooms. Other activities include roaming the hotel’s 18 acres of grounds – which include a vegetable patch, sports pavilion, sheep’s field and even a wooden finger jetty – or relaxing in a hammock or with a picnic (which the hotel can prepare).

After long days of action, the hotel will welcome guests back with open arms in a setting that evokes a cosy home: expect bold textiles, modernist furniture and open spaces which encourage socialising.

Forty bedrooms are located in an original Georgian building, and a new contemporary wing has been added – meaning a different aesthetic to the usual and more traditional hotels you’ll find in the Lakes. Rooms contrast traditional features, such as four-poster beds and antique furniture, with more contemporary furnishings, such as modern light fixtures. Most have lake and fells views.

Family suites and dog-friendly rooms are available, as is an Ofsted-registered kids’ club and dog facilities such as dog bowls and suggested walks.

Two restaurants complete the offering. The Living Space serves all-day British and European-style dishes using local produce (think squid, mussels and doorstop-sized sandwiches) in a relaxed setting. Rampsbeck Restaurant will offer more of the same, but with lake views and three-course menus. Breakfast will include the likes of eggs cooked to order or DIY waffles, ready for the day of action ahead.
