Overlooking the Praça Luis de Camões, Lisbon’s main square, the Bairro Alto Hotel is a beloved historic establishment in the heart of the Portuguese capital. In February 2016, the luxury hotel embarked on a renovation and expansion project, followed by a complete closure in November 2017 for the work. Pritzker-prize winning Portuguese architect Eduardo Souto Moura was recruited to oversee the restoration, which includes the addition of the adjacent 18th-century building to add 33 additional guestrooms. This new addition will also house a “concept restaurant” serving “bohemian Lisbon flavors,” a new meeting and events space, plus a wellness area with a fully equipped gym and an area for massages/spa treatments.
Slated to open in September 2018, the Bairro Alto Hotel will have a total of 87 rooms, including 10 suites, six interconnecting suites and two signature suites—some of which have river views. A hotel highlight—destined to become a popular hang-out for locals—will be the new panoramic terrace where you can enjoy a meal or sunset cocktail.
Portugal continues to soar in popularity among travelers, with Lisbon attracting more and more Americans.
The Bairro Alto Hotel is a member of Leading Hotels of the World. In other news from LHW, the Datai Langkawi will soon show off a renovation, along with Oslo’s Hotel Continental and the Hotel de Paris in Monte Carlo. On the horizon: The Houghton will open in Johannesburg, South Africa in January 2019.
