Jacks Monterey, the new lobby bar/restaurant at the AAA Four Diamond Portola Hotel & Spa, opened in April as part of the hotel’s $6 million renovation.
Jacks Monterey’s menu has a hyper-local focus, offering numerous Monterey County wines, including wine on draft from 10SPAN Vineyard. Fun fact: 10SPAN supports the Ventana Wildlife Society’s mission to conserve the native wildlife and habitats of California’s Central Coast. Those who prefer beer can opt for craft beer made onsite at the Portola's craft brewery, Peter B’s Brewpub, or other local draft beers.
Jacks Monterey has even partnered with Elyx Vodka to offer a “Group Effort” experience curated by mixologist Tuyet. Guests can order drinks served in a copper pineapple for two, or in a larger copper pineapple for four or more, accompanied by a serving ladle. Tuyet’s Elixer is a favorite.
Tuyet’s Elixer
- 2 oz. Elyx Vodka
- 1 oz. mint syrup
- 1 oz. pineapple puree
- ½ lemon, juiced
- 2 dashes of hibiscus butters
- Club soda
Garnish: Mint sprig
Method: Combine all ingredients, except for club soda, into a mixing glass and add ice
Shake and strain over ice into highball glass, and top with club soda
Another popular drink is the Portola Rita, made with Avion Silver Tequila, ginger honey, lime juice, Brooklyn Sriracha bitters, passion fruit puree, and sweet and sour mix.
Jacks Monterey’s lunch menu features salads, sandwiches, and pizzas. The dinner menu includes solo and sharing plates.
The San Francisco-based Puccini Group designed the new restaurant and lobby bar, with inspiration coming from the Monterey landscape, wildlife, and local artist community. Patrons will find modern furnishings reflecting the weathered woods of the nearby docks and canneries, blue tones of the Pacific Ocean, and pinks and grays that dot the coastline.
Jacks Monterey is open seven days a week from 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m.
