The buzz in bustling Bangkok? A new Luxury Collection hotel made its debut on October 31. After an extensive renovation project, the old Plaza Athenee Bangkok has been transformed and rebranded. Now known as The Athenee Hotel, a Luxury Collection Hotel, the property is situated on the grounds of the Kandhavas Palace, the former residence of Princess Valaya Alongkorn. You’ll find a contemporary design with traditional Thai accents in the 374 guestrooms (including 27 suites).
A stand-out feature is the outdoor swimming pool—designed like a lagoon in the hotel’s rooftop garden, surrounded by lush landscaping of indigenous trees and flowers. Another highlight is the Spa Athénée on the fifth floor. The spa philosophy is based on “long-standing Eastern tradition that your blood type is the key to your well-being”— to quote the official website— and “the trained therapists customize every treatment according to your specific blood type.” There’s also a fitness center stocked with TechnoGym equipment overlooking the garden, a business center, eight different F&B outlets, and the Royal Club Lounge for the use of Club Room and Suite guests.
This is the second Luxury Collection hotel in Bangkok, along with the Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit, a 33-story tower connected to Asok BTS skytrain station, Sukhumvit subway station and Terminal 21 shopping mall. Highlights at this sister property include rooms decorated by renowned design studio Hirsch Bedner Associates and sculptures by Steven Gormley dotting the public spaces. In greater Thailand, the Luxury Collection brand also comprises The Naka Island, Phuket and Vana Belle, Koh Samui.
