Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group has announced the development of three boutique properties in Japan, branded as Mandarin Oriental, Setouchi, located around the Seto Inland Sea. The three resorts are set to launch between 2027 and 2030.
Mandarin Oriental, Setouchi at Takamatsu is scheduled to open in 2027. The 92-key urban resort is situated on the waterfront of Takamatsu, the capital city of Kagawa prefecture known as the gateway to Setouchi. It is a 30-minute drive from Takamatsu Airport, while Japan’s JR rail network also provides convenient train access from Takamatsu. The resort will be ideally placed for exploring the Seto Inland Sea and wider region by boat. The property will also offer F&B venues, a spa and wellness facility.
Mandarin Oriental, Setouchi at Naoshima is also scheduled to open in 2027. This 22-key contemporary Japanese ryokan is set in a fishing village on a site that has been the residence of the Miyake clan for over 800 years. Ryokan-style guest suites and villas will be located in a new main building and also in three village houses, equipped with private terraces and gardens.
The third resort, which is slated to open in 2030 on a separate island, will have 50 guestrooms with immersive wellness experiences. Further details of this property will be announced in due course.
To link the three new properties, Mandarin Oriental, Setouchi will curate a cruise experience for guests to travel between the sites onboard a private yacht.
Driven by sustainability, the design of Mandarin Oriental, Setouchi will respect and celebrate the region’s beauty and heritage. Located between the main Japanese islands of Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu, the Setouchi region is known for its landscapes, mild climate, unique cuisine, and cultural and artistic treasures. The Seto Inland Sea, with its multitude of islands, offers a range of attractions and experiences, both on and off the water.
