Matakauri Lodge has completed a large-scale, soft refurbishment throughout the lodge and all room categories, spending nearly $1 million NZD (approximately $650,000) in the process. Interior designer Virginia Fisher has “edited and refined” the lodge’s offering by introducing a new color palette of warm greys and straw yellows.
The soft refurbishment included a repaint, new furniture and reupholstering of existing furniture including daybeds in the lodge's suite and deluxe suite rooms. It has also included the repurposing of the Lower Lounge, which has become one of the lodge’s main dining spaces to allow quests to enjoy the room’s panoramic views of The Remarkables, Cecil Peak and Walter Peak.
After close to 10 years in operation, it was timely to review the interior design to ensure it remained fresh and up to date, said Fisher.
“We have also had the opportunity to discover how the lodge works and get a better understanding of how guests are likely to use it. I was lucky to have very collaborative discussions with the team about what’s working well, where guests like to spend their time and how other areas of the lodge can be better utilized,” she said in a written release.
The change in the color palette aligned the lodge, lodge room, suites and deluxe suites with the softer colors of the Owner’s Cottage, which was opened in late 2013.
“We have moved to softer colors that work nicely with the strong light that Matakauri receives,” the designer explained. "The deep barn rust has been replaced with a warm, mellow grey and we have brought a lovely straw yellow into the rooms through new sofas. The rust is still picked up in a few pieces of furniture and all the colors tie together beautifully through the rugs in the room."
The update and refurbishment has been completed in time for the peak travel season and is being supported through a multi-channeled, consumer-facing marketing campaign.
Situated directly on Lake Wakatipu and only seven minutes from Queenstown, Matakauri Lodge offers twelve luxury suites and the Owner’s Cottage. The lodge offers mountain and lake views, as well as spa and fitness facilities.
