The Maybourne Hotel Group—operators of Claridge’s, The Connaught and The Berkeley in London and The Maybourne Beverly Hills in Los Angeles—is set to launch its fifth hotel within the group this summer 2021 with the opening of The Maybourne Riviera on the Côte d’Azur, France.
The Maybourne Riviera is built on a rocky peninsula above the picturesque town of Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, with views of the coastline from Monte Carlo to in the west to Italy in the east. The modernist hotel, with exterior design by Jean-Michel Wilmotte, will have 69 rooms and suites, all with sea views from private terraces. (Guests can anticipate a “respectful nod” to the modernist architects Le Corbusier and Eileen Grey, who built their homes in nearby Cap Moderne.)
The Maybourne Riviera is collaborating with globally recognized artists, designers and architects to create “one-of-a-kind” spaces, with Andre Fu, Bryan O’Sullivan Studio, Marcelo Joulia, Pierre Yovanovitch, Pascal Goujon and Rigby & Rigby all adding their distinctive style, as well as the Maybourne in-house design team led by Michelle Wu. In addition, the hotel will embrace the traditional arts and crafts of the region, sourcing and working with local artists and artisans to create bespoke art, glassware, ceramics and furnishings.
For the F&B scene, Mauro Colagreco of three-Michelin star Mirazur in nearby Menton and holder of the No. 1 position in the World’s 50 Best Restaurants, will bring his vision of the region. Located on the hotel’s top floor, the restaurant will draw on one of his favorite themes, the sea. Sitting alongside, “global super-chef” Jean-Georges Vongerichten will launch his first outpost in the South of France, with cuisine inspired by the hotel’s location on the French Italian border. Japanese chef Hiro Sato will also bring his world-class sushi to The Maybourne Riviera.
Set in restored gardens with walled-in walkways, citrus orchards and a seasonal herb garden, The Maybourne Riviera will have both indoor and outdoor swimming pools and a spa. Guests of the hotel also have exclusive access to the Maybourne Riviera Beach Club nearby.
In the historic town of Roquebrune, travelers can check out its 10th-century medieval castle, ancient Vallonnet caves, and the 2,000-year-old olive tree in the center of the Old Town that still bears fruit. Painters, poets and writers from WB Yeats and Coco Chanel to Dali, Picasso and Jean Cocteau have all been to the town for inspiration.
