The Turnberry Isle Miami has embarked on an ambitious upgrade and expansion project which will result in its reflagging as a JW Marriott. Currently the resort is part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection, which is growing by leaps and bounds. (In fact, with the addition of Hotel Beaux Arts, there are now three Miami hotels in the Autograph Collection; see our article here.)
Situated in Aventura, between Miami and Fort Lauderdale, the resort occupies a 300 acre-estate equipped with championship golf courses, a comprehensive spa and fitness center, and pool flanked by private cabanas. The official website advertises an “endless escape of pampered play.” The makeover will upgrade the existing lobby, front driveway and pool, while adding a new 16-story building called the Orchid Tower. Designed by the architectural firm Nichols, Brosch, Wurst, Wolfe and Associates, the tower will have 323 new guest rooms. An additional 110,000 square feet of meeting space will also be added.
The resort will stay open during the renovation, expected to be completed by the end of 2018. The Real Deal reports that the project will cost $175 million, and that the rebranding to JW Marriott is aimed at attracting groups and conventions.
As quoted in The Miami Herald, Turnberry Associates CEO Jeff Soffer said, “This investment in Turnberry Isle ensures we continue to deliver the best experience and amenities to our guests and club members. We’re preserving the elements of Turnberry Isle that have made it an enduring and beloved destination, while adding features that keep the property at the cutting edge of service and style.”
Turnberry’s other developments include Turnberry Ocean Club, Turnberry Ocean Colony, Porto Vita, Fontainebleau Miami Beach and Aventura Mall.
