The renowned hotelier behind the ultra-luxury La Réserve group of hotels is making a move in Zermatt. Michel Reybier Hospitality has announced the acquisition of the historic Schweizerhof Zermatt. The property is currently undergoing a six-month, top-to-bottom overhaul to reopen on December 21, 2018— just in time for the winter ski season.
Designed in an alpine chalet style, Schweizerhof is a historic landmark in the legendary Swiss ski resort, situated in the very heart of it all on The Bahnhofstrasse. (Central Zermatt, along with this main street, is a car-free zone to prevent pollution from marring views of the Matterhorn.) The idea is to create a new “avant-garde concept” for the Schweizerhof Zermatt, converting it into a chic “living hub” for both families and “tribes.” There will be 95 rooms and suites— completely redesigned with contemporary touches. According to the press release, “The Schweizerhof Zermatt promises to be the perfect place to relax and reconnect in a setting that’s luxurious but never arrogant.”
In addition to La Réserve, Mama Shelter and MOB Hotels, Michel Reybier is the majority shareholder of Aevis Victoria SA, including the Victoria-Jungfrau Collection which comprises Victoria-Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa in Interlaken, Eden au Lac in Zurich, the Bellevue Palace in Berne and the Crans Ambassador Luxury Sport Resort in Crans Montana. Tip for wine lovers: It’s also possible to book La Chartreuse, Michel Reybier’s private family residence at the Château Cos d’Estournel wine estate in Bordeaux wine country.
