Traveling with family offers a unique mix of quality time, shared adventures, and immersive experiences. With family travel on the rise, multigenerational trips offer a perfect opportunity to capture an always-expanding market and help travelers create lasting memories.
In 2026, both immediate family travel and multigenerational family travel were the top two biggest travel trends for the year, according to Virtuoso’s Luxe Report. What started as a post-Covid trend has grown to a movement, fueled in part by larger and larger family groups traveling together, Shawna Huffman Owen, the CEO of Huffman Travel, a Virtuoso Agency, told Luxury Travel Advisor.
“There’s nothing like the quality time you get with people when you’re on neutral ground… People are talking about memories all the time now,” Huffman Owen said. “People are really being driven by the experience before the property: People want to have that private dinner on top of Table Mountain with their family of 25 in Cape Town. There’s definitely been an increase in families taking everyone.”
And while these trips look different for everyone, families were increasingly targeting far-off destinations. Italy, Japan, and Costa Rica were the three most popular family destinations for 2026, Virtuoso noted, followed by domestic trips in the United States.
Traveling with family also means more dollars going into the market. In 2023, family travel represented 35 percent of the total leisure travel market, accounting for $209.6 billion, according to independent market research platform Gitnux.org. By next year, the family vacation segment is expected to grow to $350 billion globally.

What Advisors Should Know
Family vacations can be big or small, as close as a drive down the coast or a flight halfway across the world. But no matter where families opt to go, the fact is they are choosing to go somewhere. And with the average annual family travel budgets on the rise, this is clearly a lucrative market that doesn’t appear to be slowing.
