North House Cowes, Isle of Wight, England
8Telegraph expert rating
The cool seaside interiors are a welcome addition to the Cowes hotel scene and this beautiful Grade II-listed townhouse, dating from the 1850s, still retains many of its original features, including attractive fireplaces. The bar is enlivened with shell-embossed Farrow and Ball wallpaper, natural light floods the interiors to illuminate the subtle marine colour scheme and artworks, and the restaurant spills out onto a pretty paved terrace dotted with wicker garden furniture; a lovely spot for lunch or pre-dinner drinks. Tucked away at the back of the hotel is a small heated swimming pool flanked by sun-loungers. Plump for Room One in the historic main building, which features an in-room rolltop bath. The Boathouse Isle of Wight, England
8Telegraph expert rating
The attractive blue building with a wooden upturned boat on the wall at the front and buzzing seafront terrace is the kind of place that is hard to pass without stopping for a drink. The interior is modern with plenty of historical flourishes like gilt-framed mirrors and a burgundy leather Chesterfield sofa. Models of yachts and pieces of antique boats add to the seaside feel, and warm and welcoming service makes you feel like you are staying with friends. The rooms are bright and stylish with a chic New England look: think Laura Ashley prints with a beachy theme in pale blues combined with white furniture and pale carpets. Three of the four rooms have sea views, and the fourth room has a whirlpool bath so you can enjoy bubbles instead of boats. Read expert review. From £79per night. Check availability. George Hotel Yarmouth, Isle of Wight, England
8Telegraph expert rating
A handsome, mid 18th-century building in the charming little resort of Yarmouth. The view here never fails to delight: the charming wooden pier, yachts slipping out of the harbour into the Solent, and the Solent itself, stretching across to the Lymington river. The Georgian core of the building, the panelled hall and bedrooms with nicely sloping floors above, are charming, while the garden adds a fresh feel. What really transformed the George was the brasserie, with a stone floored, awning-covered terrace that leads to the garden and the shingle beach beyond. It’s a room that works perfectly; elegant yet buzzing, contemporary but with echoes of its Georgian surroundings in the softly painted panelling. Read expert review. From £125per night. Hillside Ventnor, Isle of Wight, England
8Telegraph expert rating
This thatched property was built in the 1800s and has been completely renovated by the current owner Gert. Minimalist and Scandinavian, everything is well thought-out, even the way the shadows fall from the wall lights. Huge, brightly coloured canvases are Gert’s passion and are frequently rearranged so they can be admired and discussed in different positions. A sweeping staircase leads up to the accommodation where the white theme continues (even the televisions are white), as does the artwork. Beds, handmade in Denmark, are extremely comfortable and the bedding is crisp white cotton with vintage woollen Welsh blankets giving a splash of colour. The sun terrace overlooks lovely gardens with views across the rooftops to the sea. Read expert review. From £143per night. Check availability. Rates provided by Booking.com.
Albert Cottage Hotel East Cowes, Isle of Wight, England
8Telegraph expert rating
This romantic hotel on the Osborne estate was once the home of Princess Beatrice, Queen Victoria’s youngest daughter. Inside, much of the Victorian splendour has been retained, with original tiled floors, ornate coving, wood panelling and huge fireplaces. The current owner has tried to faithfully restore the look as much as possible, with period elegance extending to the bedrooms. Each of the 10 rooms is unique in character and colour. You might rest your head in a carved ebony bed with a cream antique silk duvet cover, or a walnut Louis XVI bed pushed against a cornflower-blue wall. You might have a bedroom-sized bathroom with a rolltop bath or a balcony overlooking the garden. For a romantic getaway choose the palatial honeymoon suite. Read expert review. From £120per night.
