Namibia continues to top travelers’ bucket lists with a swelling interest in the southern African nation. A flurry of new luxury lodges, like Sonop by Zannier Hotels, has only increased this interest. (Long-established camps are also showing off exciting renovations, including Wilderness Safaris’ Serra Cafema and andBeyond Sossusvlei Desert Lodge.) Now Natural Selection has announced a new lodge to entice adventurers in 2020. Located in the Southern part of the country, Kwessi Dune Lodge will join a portfolio of properties including Hoanib Valley Camp, Shipwreck Lodge, Etosha Mountain Lodge, Safarihoek, and Safari House.
At the doorstep to Sossusvlei’s famous red sand dunes, Kwessi Dune Lodge will be situated on the NamibRand Nature Reserve, a sweeping territory of more than 531,000 acres that comprises one of the largest private reserves in southern Africa. This protected zone was the brainchild in the 1980s of Namibian farmer Albi Bruckner, who integrated several farms and removed the fences that divided them.
Kwessi Dune Lodge will have 10 tented, air-conditioned rooms measuring 88 square meters, designed with four-poster beds, map murals, verandas and indoor and outdoor showers. A nice perk will be the special “star gazer” area in each room, allowing guests to sleep under the stars in one of the best places in the world to view the night sky (it’s been selected as an official “dark sky reserve” because of low light pollution). Stunning desert views will be framed through walls of glass in the main area, where facilities will include a bar, library, dining area and swimming pool.
First launched in 2016 by African safari veterans, Natural Selection is a conservation-minded company currently operating in South Africa, Botswana and Namibia. Notably, Natural Selection donates 1.5% of its turnover revenue to conservation every year.
