Pine Cay: New Barefoot Luxury

Pine Cay is a secluded 800-acre barefoot luxury private island in Turks & Caicos, just a 20-minute boat ride from the mainland. The island comprises a small collection of private homes, two miles of white-sand beaches and a 12-room hotel that is now part of a Relais & Chateaux.

The island is overseen by a small collective of multigenerational homeowners and is home to 38 private houses, eight of which are available to rent, and the 12-room boutique hotel. The island also has a restaurant that serves up daily-changing menus, Tiki Beach Bar, a Sand Dollar Spa, a gym and tennis court. Guests can explore the two-mile stretch of beach, surrounding lagoons and the world’s third largest barrier reef with snorkeling, diving, fishing, sailing, paddle-boarding and kayaking excursions.

Pine Cay’s storied history began in the late 1950s, when Austrian explorer Count Ferdinand Czernin stumbled across the island on his travels. He began a mission to share the island with like-minded friends eager to escape the demands of metropolitan life. These families are still key guardians of the low-key island. Of the 38 homes, eight are available to rent. And what began life as the Clubhouse for homeowners and their guests has evolved into a boutique hotel.

A recent renovation redesigned the hotel’s 10 Beachfront Rooms, and added a new spa, gym and two freestanding Beachfront Suites, all designed to show off Pine Cay’s original rustic charm and barefoot ethos. Bathrooms have double vanities, a walk-in rain-shower and an outdoor waterfall shower. Private outdoor decks have double daybeds, dining areas and direct access to the beach.

Good to know: The Tiki Beach Bar was added earlier this year, and a full renovation of the main bar is set to follow next year.
