From Baglioni to Fairmont, the Maldives will see a number of high-profile resort openings this year. As we reported in a magazine feature story this month, the Indian Ocean playground has transformed itself into a favorite jetsetters’ haunt, not just because of the Eden-like scenery, but also because the luxury resorts continuously push the envelope in terms of over-the-top, trendsetting amenities (like underwater restaurants and astronomical observatories).
Grand Water Villa
The latest resort opening was the Fairmont Sirru Fen Fushi, which debuted in April. Situated on a 40-acre island in the Shaviyani Atoll in North Maldives, the resort takes its name from the local expression for “secret water island.” It’s privy to one of the largest lagoons in the Maldives, home to an underwater art installation by Jason deCaires Taylor that doubles as a coral regeneration project. The “Coral Cube” is described as “the worlds first semi-submerged art space,” and the resort’s team of marine biologists lead guests on complimentary tours of this underwater world.
Two Bedroom Water Villa
Another resort highlight: The Fairmont Sirru Fen Fushi offers a swimming pool that runs the length of the island (650 feet long).
Equipped with sun decks and private pools, the 120 villas were designed by Hirsch Bedner Associates. There’s a Willow Stream Spa, kids club, and four dining outlets including Onu Onu, an open-air bar constructed in bamboo by Balinese artisans. No man-made materials were used in the construction.
Activities run the gamut from local culture tours and dolphin cruises aboard the resort’s private yacht to Thai boxing classes and yoga.
